Post Your Task and Get Inputs: Collective Brainstorming to Handle Debbie's Presentation Challenge

Hello, TESOL folks:

So pleased to orchestrate our TESOL Blog this week.  My greatest appreciation goes to everyone of our TESOL Family. As the ancient Chinese saying goes "We come from Four Seas, yet we are all brothers and sisters", let's cherish the precious karma we have to be within TESOL.

I would like to propose an initiative helpful to each of us, namely, each of use post your Debbie task here along with your draft idea, and get input from any other TESOL members? You can directly make a new post with your task on it.

One of the biggest benefits is that you can get or solicit input from the date of posting until your final presentation day! And, you can even directly solicit expert input from Marc or Debbie!

I would like to be the first one to post my task and beg any TESOL brothers and sisters to lend your kind hands to give your precious ideas or suggestions.

TOPIC:  Cultural Diversity in the Classroom.

Imagine a group of students that come from countries that are at war with each others.
What kinds of problems may erupt during class?
What are your ways to prevent the problems or mitigate them?

Create and teach a dialogue that would help students focus on their similarities instead of differences.

My presentation has 2 components: Class presentation and a related teaching activities.

Please kindly help me with any idea or suggestions.

  1. This is a research from internet that give some ideas to the teacher how to manage a multicultural class. Teachers need to develop a multicultural classroom environment. 1. Teach students respect others' cultures and values. 2. Help all students learn to function successfully in a multicultural society. 3. develop a positive self-concept in those students who are most affected by racism. 4. Help all students experience, in positive ways both their differences and culturally diverse people and their similarities as human beings. 5. Encourage student to view people of diverse cultures working together a unique parts of a whole community. Some activities are recommended: Language arts, social studies, building blocks dramatic play, music games, and I suggest that to have a pot-luck party, every students bring and share their traditional food to the class as usually food or music can make people together closely.---Carol

  2. Thats a great idea that Carol has given. my suggestion will also include to give them a common platform to cherish. For instance, local celebrations like Chirstmas, Remembrance day will be new ideas for them and they can keep their differences away and celebrate these as a fresh start.

  3. Hi Isaac,

that is an interesting project that you have. It will also be something that we all as new instructors will likely face in the future. I think it's a good idea to set the boundaries at the start of the program and reminders at the start of the class. This reminds me of a time when I use to coach the wresting team at a highschool I worked at. I knew some of the wrestling team members had ill feelings towards other members. I made it very clear that I would not entertain or tolerate any type of ill treatment towards another team member. Any issues that students had with each other could not be brought into the wrestling room. It had to be left at the door. If they could not comply with my rules that they would have to leave the team. I let them know that they were all here for the same purpose. I did this speech at the start of my program and a mini speech at the start of each class.

Carol's suggestion of researching the internet or speaking with other teachers is a great idea.

Good luck Isaac. I'm looking forward to your presentation.

    Cheers

  4. As for my own presentation....

Demonstrating and analyzing a teaching approach. Research and Discuss the 3 teaching approaches below. What is each one's focus in teaching? [For example, they want the students to learn more grammar, more speaking]

    i. Grammar - Translation Method
ii. Direct Approach - native language isn't permitted
    iii. Audio-Lingual Approach [the USA]

*Choose one of the approaches above and teach your peers for 5-7minutes using this approach.

So I've just started doing some research on each teaching method. I'm not sure at the moment which method I will use to teach you guys. I think I will determine that after I've finished researching.

    Thanks guys,

    Rod

  5. Hi Isaac,
At the college where I worked, at the beginning of each semester, instructors told students about the conduct policy that basically said the college is a respectful and inclusive environment where harassment and any other inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. This gives the instructor something to refer to if an incident occurs and makes it easier to address the problem immediately.

It might also be useful to discuss the issue in the classroom in terms of becoming Canadian and the expectation that old enmities will be left behind. Canadian culture?

Glad to hear this discussion will be ongoing.

My topic is Fluency and Accuracy.

  6. Hi Isaac,
Different experiences of different people cause them have different feeling of the world. In LINC classes the teacher has a very important job to find some similarities among the students to make all of them motivated in attending the class discussion.
As Dianne says there are always similar problems that the students prefer to talk about. The teacher is the one who thinks about the students' concerns.
My topic is the differences between teaching and tutoring.
    Thank,
    Nadia

  7. Hi Isaac,

As your topic is very important nowadays, I feel inclusivity is important in the classroom. The instructor shouldn't rely solely on the assumption that adult students are aware and knowledgeable of all cultures and should facilitate the democratic and diplomatic classroom environment. Perhaps, using certain curriculum topics and holiday festivities to segway into the classroom, thus minimizing ignorance of those who aren't so culturally insightful.
